VERIFYING THE ACCURACY OF FIVE-AXIS MACHINE TOOLS

New paper on verifying the accuracy of five-axis machine tools presented during the Machining Innovations Conference now available.

In the aerospace industry the application of five-axis machines is increasing and becoming common practice. The determination of the accuracy of such five-axis machines however is often difficult because linear and rotary axes are used in combination resulting in complex motions. Standard five-axis kinematic accuracy tests are specified in ISO10791-6. In this paper these tests are used to determine the machine’s accuracy employing five machine axes simultaneously (a so-called BK4 test). A torus work piece is derived that imitates the machine movements during this test. The machine deviations measured during the BK4 measurement are compared with CMM results of the torus revealing the same amplitude. Thus a practical implementation of such 5-axis machine accuracy assessment is shown for the first time.
